Regular Volunteering

From staffing the front desk and museum store, to providing assistance for preparing activity materials, regular volunteers provide an excellent arrival experience for all visitors.

Activity Prep Volunteer

Assist education and museum staff with preparing materials for museum activities and events. Volunteer shifts will be during regular operating hours: Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday-Monday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Open to all volunteers, no training required.

Science Table Volunteer

Volunteers with general science knowledge will staff the museum's Puget Sound Gallery and outdoor Naturalist Cabin. This is a great opportunity for those who have knowledge and interest in science--creativity and initiative are both encouraged! 

Cafe Volunteer

Help ensure the cafe runs smoothly by bussing tables, restocking materials, processing cafe sales transactions and providing top notch customer service. Cash handling experience is required.

Gift Shop Assistant

Staff the Museum Store by providing customer service, pricing items and ringing up charges. Open to volunteers 16 and older (training provided). This is an every-week position, and a 6-month minimum commitment is required.

Gallery Assistant

Tidy the museum galleries by putting away props, straightening exhibits and engaging with visitors. Depending on the weather, you might also help in our Outdoor Discovery Center. This is a prime opportunity for those interested in having fun during a weekly volunteer gig!

Art Studio Assistant

Help maintain the recycled art area while engaging with visitors in the Arts & Parts Studio. This is a weekly volunteer position and we require a 3-month minimum commitment for this position.

MakeSpace Assistant

Facilitate onsite art and science activities in the museum's Arts & Parts Studio and other galleries. Volunteers will assist with upcoming special themed events and activities. You must be comfortable using crafting tools such as glue guns and sewing machines.

Face Painter

Exercise your artistic abilities by painting faces on our busy weekends! Weekly commitment preferred, artistic talent required.

Education Programs

Education volunteers assist with a variety of museum programs for children and families. Help with childcare, facilitate arts and science projects, work in a classroom, supervise museum play and more! Additional required trainings and observation screening is required before final placement for all education based positions. A second interview is required for all education program volunteers.

Early Learning Program Assistant

Assist in early learning experiences for children ages 3-5 that focus on social, emotional, physical and intellectual development. Volunteers commit to work one 3.5-hour shift per week, with a 3-month minimum commitment required.

The 2016-2017 School Year is from Sept. 20, 2016-May 26, 2017.

Mondays-Thursdays: 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Field Trip & Home School Assistant

Help museum educators lead elementary school workshops in the museum and at schools during the school year.

Evening Programs

Candyce Bollinger

While parents have class with Candyce, their kids play in the museum with staff and volunteers! This parenting class is offered on the first Tuesday of each month, from 6-8 p.m. All shifts are from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Foster Support Group

This support group meets on the third Tuesday of each month and is offered in partnership with Family Education Support Services. Foster parents enjoy interacting with other parents, while kids play in the museum with staff and volunteers! Due to the high volume of repeat visitors, we are seeking volunteers who can commit to the program on a regular basis. All shifts are from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Kinship Support Group

This weekly support program meets every Tuesday night and is offered in partnership with Family Education Support Services. Kinship caregivers enjoy the opportunity to engage with other caregivers while kids play in the museum with staff and volunteers! The program involves a small group of repeat families and requires volunteers who can commit to volunteering for this program on a weekly and/or bi-weekly basis. Every Tuesday, from 6-8:30 p.m.


PowerParenting

This free parenting class is offered on the second Tuesday of every month, from 6-8 p.m. Parents explore various topics and exchange ideas with other parents while their kids play in the museum with staff and volunteers. All shifts are from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Special Events

Special event volunteers do a wide variety of jobs depending on the event. From activity facilitation to event setup, this is the perfect opportunity for groups and individuals looking for minimal commitment and a maximum amount of fun.

Offsite Assistant

Help with make-and-take art and science projects, face painting and museum activities at the Hands On Children's Museum booth at various community offsite events. Volunteers are responsible for the transportation to and from events and must be at least 15 years old.

Museum Family Events

Help make our special museum-wide events happen. Assist with art activities, face paint, food service and greeting at events, including the museum's annual Boo Bash fall costume party and Noon Year's Eve on December 31.

Free Friday Night (FFN)

This free evening of museum fun for everyone is held on the first Friday of every month. Volunteers help in our exhibit galleries facilitating activities, face paint and help maintain the museum exhibits. Dinner is provided for volunteers.

Parents' Night Out (PNO)

In this quarterly program, kids between ages 4-10 are dropped off for a night of museum fun, while parents enjoy a night out. During this fun evening, kids snack on pizza, participate in activities and projects. Dinner is provided for volunteers. Volunteer screening observation is required. All shifts from 5:30-10 p.m.

Adult Event Support

Assist with setting up, greeting and overseeing activities during our adult-catered events at the museum. Volunteers must be 21+.

Adult Swim

Volunteers will help facilitate activities and games for our themed evenings suited for ages 21+. Dinner is provided for volunteers.
